From Irene Greene, LGBT Therapists member and Chair:

Dear Lovely Humans: Too often, we are so busy attending to the big picture of social change and helping others that we ignore caring for ourselves. Let’s watch out for each other and ourselves. Let’s keep the revolution healthy! Following are workshops and groups designed to help you (and your organization) stay strong, healthy and empowered.
Skills-Sharing Workshops & Women’s Groups:

MN DHS Accepting Applications for Behavioral Health Planning Council
From Heron Abegaze, Mental Health Program Advisor:
We are in the process of renewing applications for the Behavioral Health Planning Council. We will be filling between 25 - 30 vacant seats. Beginning immediately, we will accept applications for council membership. Applications must be received by December 5, 2016. We are inviting members from the following five councils and individuals from priority populations to fill vacant seats.

  • State Advisory Council on Mental Health
  • Subcommittee on Children’s Mental Health
  • American Indian Mental Health Advisory Council
  • Citizen’s Advisory Council
  • American Indian Council on Chemical Dependency

Each state is required to establish and maintain a state Mental Health Planning Council for adults with Serious Mental Illness and children with Serious Emotional Disturbances under Title XIX of the Public Health Services Act (42 U.S.C. 300x). In recent years, states have been aligning their mental health and substance abuse agencies and planning functions to better coordinate behavioral health services in their state.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is recommending that states expand their Mental Health Planning Council to include substance abuse and move towards a Behavioral Health Planning Council (BHPC) that addresses both mental health and substance abuse concerns. SAMHSA encourages states to expand their required council's comprehensive approach by designing and implementing regularly scheduled collaborations with existing substance abuse prevention and treatment advisory councils to ensure that the council reviews concerns and services for persons with, or at risk for, substance abuse and substance use disorders.

Responsibilities

  1. Review Federal Block Grant plans and applications and submit recommendations for modifications to the plans and applications
  2. Review concerns and services for adults with serious mental illness, children with serious emotional disturbances and persons with, or at risk for, substance abuse and substance use disorders
  3. Monitor, review and evaluate the allocation and adequacy of mental health services and substance use disorder treatment within the state
  4. Participate in other council activities under the direction of Mental Health and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division

  • February 6, 2017 8:30am – 3:00pm Elmer L. Andersen Human Services Building, 540 Cedar Street, St. Paul, MN

Compensation
