Mindful Sexuality for LGBTQ People
From new
LGBT Therapists member Rick Laska of SkyHill:
Sex and intimacy are important events in our lives but it can be difficult to stay mentally present in sensual moments with some of the stress and thoughts running through our minds. For some people, this can lead to performance anxiety, a poor body-image, sexual dysfunction, or sex that isn’t satisfying, connecting, or intimate.
This 8 week group will help you identify and practice mindfulness techniques to embody your individual and partnered sexual experiences. Mindfulness can help manage symptoms of depression and anxiety, heal from sexual trauma, assist in the management of compulsive sexual behaviors, begin to address body-image issues, and manage other mental health issues you may face. We will also explore ways to be sexually mindful and empowered in your daily life!
Who: People wanting to explore mindful sex
Cost: $25 per session for 8 sessions
When: Determined by participants
Where: SkyHill, 6800 France Ave, Ste 520, Edina MN
Each group is limited to 8 participants. For more information or to enroll, call Rick at 612-564-9199 or email rick@skyhilltherapy.com

Group Counseling With LGBTQI Persons
by Kristopher M. Goodrich and Melissa Luke
According to the American Counseling Association, this book is "the ultimate resource for LGBTQI group counseling". If you lead groups with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and intersex (LGBTQI) clients, then Group Counseling With LGBTQI Personsis a must for affirmative, effective counseling. This unique text offers an initial reference to the distinct needs and experiences of LGBTQI individuals, as well as a source for myriad resources and intentional interventions. It also provides group leaders, counselors, students, and supervisors with an understanding of group counseling issues across settings and contexts that influence the experience of LGBTQI persons. Features include:

  • Chapters organized around particular populations promote an understanding of the differences between LGBTQI identities and allow counselors to intervene based on specific client needs.
  • Multiple counseling interventions in every chapter serve as a vital resource for both novice counselors and experienced group leaders.
  • Case studies and cautions/recommendations in every chapter enlighten readers about common mistakes and provide a rationale for how interventions are structured and implemented in practice.
  • Individual attention to resident, community, outpatient, school-based, and other settings.
  • Discussions on several developmental life periods as well as need-based services, such as addictions, grief, and family counseling.
  • Special attention to the importance of allies and social justice initiatives.
  • Separate chapter on the emergent needs of LGBTQI couples and families.

PsySR Statement on Latest Reports of APA-CIA Collusion
Previously undisclosed emails, made public in a comprehensive report last week in the New York Times, provide further evidence of collusion between the American Psychological Association (APA) and the CIA in the development of permissive ethics policies for psychologists, policies that provided crucial support for the Bush Administration’s abusive “enhanced interrogation program.” The correspondence reveals the extent to which senior leadership at the APA worked closely with representatives of the intelligence community and the White House – over a period of months and years – to facilitate the participation of psychologists in abusive detention and interrogation operations despite the profession’s fundamental do-no-harm ethical foundation.

Today, Psychologists for Social Responsibility renews its call for transparency, accountability, and reform at the APA, the world’s largest organization of psychologists. This must include a thorough and unbiased review of its ethics code and related policies. For far too long, failed leadership, bureaucratic intransigence, and the embrace of power and prestige over human rights and dignity have diminished the APA. This was certainly true a decade ago when the Board formally authorized the involvement of psychologists in national security detention and interrogation operations, and it is still true today as the APA aggressively pursues ever closer ties with the military and intelligence community.

The misguided priorities and well-documented misdeeds of APA’s executive leadership in this critical arena continue to undermine the valuable work of dedicated psychologists, the nascent aspirations of future members of our profession, and the essential trust the public bestows upon us as caring and expert teachers, researchers, and practitioners. Most tragically, detainees who have undergone “enhanced” interrogations have suffered directly and grievously, as have their families, due to the involvement of psychologists in U.S. war-on-terror operations. A dramatic change of course at the APA is urgently needed to make sure that this does not happen again.

Without further delay, we call for the formation of a distinguished panel of experts in psychological, research, and medical ethics; organizational dynamics; and international law, appointed by an independent and authoritative body. Distinct from the ongoing review by attorney David Hoffman, this working group’s charge should be to thoroughly and transparently investigate the institutional structures, group processes, and leadership decisions that facilitated the exploitation of psychologists as degrading instruments of torture and abuse. The APA should cooperate fully with this investigation, which will hopefully lead to thoroughgoing reform of the Association.
