When Work Becomes Play - Tom Glasser
Tom Glaser becomes so enthused by the study of happiness that he often spends his precious downtime on it, especially now that he teaches classes called "Your Happiness Project."
"I try to take one full day off a week," Glaser explains, as part of his own Happiness Project. "It's a day of rest, away from work, doing whatever I want." The idea is rejuvenation. "This week it was Saturday. After sleeping in, I found myself reading about happiness, preparing to teach" he says apologetically, unable to contain his infectious smile.
It's a great case in point, actually, of one of his main ideas. Being true to yourself, following your passion. "Noticing-and then capitalizing on-what you choose to do during downtime is a great step toward more fulfillment," he says.
Glaser was inspired early this summer after stumbling upon The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. The class combines elements from the bestselling book with proven techniques from fields Glaser has studied and loved for years: Positive Psychology, Emotional Intelligence, Resilience Theory, Mindfulness Training, and more.
As a psychologist, Tom works with many people seeking more happiness. But he's quick to explain that his class isn't just for the clinically depressed. "Despite living in the land of plenty, most Americans report only moderate life satisfaction. By implementing a few simple changes, such as giving one compliment a day to their spouse, for example, or offering even small kindnesses to strangers, they can be noticeably happier."
With meditations, music, in-class exercises and discussions plus daily homework, students map out their own, unique plan to a more joyful, fulfilling, fun life.  Which may or may not involve Saturday morning reading.

Tom Glaser, MS, has been a grateful member of MN LGBT Therapists Network since its inception. He is a licensed psychologist in Minneapolis with over 24 years of experience.  He also teaches courses in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and sex ed, and offers a therapy group for men and women Tuesday evenings. In addition to Saturdays off, his own quest for happiness has led to studying with spiritual guides, riding his bike from here to Chicago, performing community theater, and relishing his mother-in-law's rhubarb crumb. For more information, visit www.tomglaserlp.com
