Happenings of "THE NETWORK"!

The Network's Next CEU Program: Friday, September 25

Title:  Your Gender Identity (Oh yeah, and your clients' too)
As therapists working (or considering working) with transgender clients, we are often focused on the nuances of their gender identities. However, in order to better understand our clients' experiences, it is critical that we get in touch with our own gendered experiences in the world. With this knowledge, we are equipped to more effectively meet our clients where they're at and truly join them on their gendered journeys. Whatever your experience with gender, come to learn and share about this multifaceted and ever-evolving topic.
Presented by: Xavier Schmitz, MSW, LICSW,
Sexual Health Institute, Minneapolis, MN

Gay Men Recovering/Relapsing from Meth Addiction:

Hi,
Although I am an "ally" I see only LGBT clients in my private practice in Edina. I would have to say that a niche at the moment is working with gay men recovering/relapsing from meth addiction. Since traditional 12-step approaches are often ineffective, I have used Harm Reduction and Humanistic-Existential theories as an alternative. This addiction is complicated by its strong affiliation with sexual compulsivity and there is no one and/or simple approach. If anyone has clients that fit this category, I would be happy to see them or consult with the current therapist.

NATIONAL MARCH FOR LGBT EQUALITY
WASHINGTON, D.C. & MINNEAPOLIS
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11

On Sunday, October 11, 2009 hundreds of thousands of supporters of equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people will march on Washington, D.C. with one simple demand for the White House and Congress: EQUAL RIGHTS NOW.

Minnesota activists are organizing to spread the word about the march and send buses to D.C. Join this group to stay informed about the October 11th demonstration and find out how you can get involved.

We will also be organizing a local solidarity demonstration, so even if you can't make it to D.C., please join us!
For more info visit: www.nationalequalitymarch.com
www.jointheimpacttc.com

WHY WE'RE MARCHING ON OCTOBER 11TH:

While President Obama made numerous promises on gay rights during his campaign, he has yet to act on most of them. We can't wait for rights to be handed to us. Like every civil rights movement in the past, it's OUR job to put pressure on the politicians to end all discriminatory laws.
Our One Single Demand:

Equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states. We will accept no less and will work until it is achieved. Equality Across America exists to support grassroots organizing in all 435 Congressional Districts to achieve full equality.

Equal Protection encompasses many issues, including:

* Repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) so that every marriage in every state has the same federal rights.
* Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell so that LGBT persons may serve in the military openly and with the same rights as their straight counterparts.
* An end to workplace discrimination for everyone with an Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that protects everyone.
* The right to adopt children and raise families like any other parents.
* Hate Crimes legislation that includes LGBT people and protects us like any other targeted group.
* Immigration reform that recognizes same-sex couples and ends the needless separation of families.

LGBT News Bits:

New Film: "Diagnosing Difference"
Transgender Issues and the DSM:
Please contact if you're interested - Sarah Deragon - sarahderagon@gmail.com

Website:    www.diagnosingdifference.com <http://www.diagnosingdifference.com >

Synopsis:    How does it feel to have your gender identity included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders? Diagnosing Difference is a full-length length documentary featuring interviews with 13 diverse scholars, activists, and artists who identify on the trans spectrum (transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, and gender variant) about the impact and implications of the Gender Identity
Disorder (GID) on their lives and communities.

Historically, non-trans medical and mental health care professionals have positioned themselves as the "experts" on transgender experience, creating standards, guidelines, and diagnoses that inform legal policies and mediate every aspect of life.

Diagnosing Difference shifts the focus to explore the many complexities of the diagnosis from the perspectives of those it affects most directly and personally, including access to medical care, legal ramifications, social stigma, implications for
psychotherapeutic care, treatment trauma, and differences in experience based on factors like race, class, gender orientation, and generation.

Diagnosing Difference humanizes the debate around the GID diagnosis by valuing personal experience as a vital (and often ignored) form of expertise. Rather than trying to create an exhaustive examination of the diagnosis or offer claims of universal representation, Diagnosing Difference is purposefully personal, seeking to expand the experience of the audience, provoke thought, and create as many questions as it answers.

Using the diagnosis as a departure point, the participants debunk myths and misconceptions about transgender identities, challenge stereotypical gender expectations, and offer educative insight into the terms and language used to describe transgender lives. This groundbreaking film is the first to explore the impact of the GID diagnosis on people who identify on the trans spectrum in their own
words and images.

Diagnosing Difference is accessible to a broad audience, including graduate training programs in psychology and medicine, and represents a significant contribution to the emerging field of trans-affirmative health care.

Filmmaker Annalise Ophelian is a queer San Francisco-based clinical psychologist, trans ally, and human sexuality educator.
