This workshop will be facilitated by Phil Oxman, LP, and will include Chris Roberts and White Ash. Phil will speak about marketing issues relative to therapists and Chris and White Ash will speak from their experiences about advertising, business development & marketing.

Thank you to the Network members who have already responded to volunteer to staff our table at The Twin Cities Pride Festival. We still have some slots left! We are planning a fun table that will distribute info about The Network & our 100+ members.  TC Pride Week-end is June 27 & 28. CONTACT IRENE if YOU WANT TO STAFF!

The tent and table will be set up and taken down by Pride's contractor.  Volunteer opportunities abound:

GROUPS
(1) New informal casual group for Gay Dads with kids: 
I thought the Mental Health Providers Network
therapists might want to know about it because their clients
who are gay dads might find it helpful.

Here's the synopsis:
We are a group of gay dads with preschool or school age children who get together for a play dates with their kids.
We talk and chat while the kids swing, slide and generally go jungle gymming around the playground.
Chats might include topics such as parenting, gay parenting, fun stuff to do with kids, potty training tips, weather, sports, arts, theatre, etc

This group might be for you if
* You've been headbutted by a toddler and laughed
* Had an expensive vase used as a ball and it was smashed and then you laughed, cried or called Macy's for a new one
* Had an argument with your partner about who's turn it was to change your toddler's dirty diaper
* Stuck your hand into a hopefully poopy free toilet to retrieve toys, hair product, a roll of toilet paper, or foam bath letters
* Your dinner parties now serve gourmet tater tots and chicken tenders with 4 cheese mac-n-cheese (you laugh, but admit it, it's at least organic)
* Instead of frequenting the newest and best restaurants you know all the best parks to burn off your kids energy
* You get why the straight folks always talked about kids being a big damper on their bedroom activities.

(3) PRIDE Institute Announces Kindred Program: 
 The Kindred Program uses individual, family, and multi-family sessions to discuss treatment and recovery for the entire family. Offered two weekends per month, this program promises to provide more support for clients and for families prior to a client leaving the residential or outpatient program. Subject: Research regarding mental health professionals who work with women who have experienced domestic violence in their same-sex relationships

Dear Mental Health Professional,

My name is Macarena Corral, and I am a doctoral student in the clinical psychology program at Argosy University in the Twin Cities and a therapist at the Domestic Abuse Project. I am currently working on a clinical research project. This project examines the experiences of mental health professionals who have expertise in providing therapy to women who have experienced domestic violence in their same-sex relationships. By gaining a greater understanding of the experiences of the therapists, I hope that this study will expand our understanding of the ways in which mental health professionals may better help lesbian victims of domestic violence.

Participation in this study will consist of one interview that will last no more than 90 minutes, as well as one brief follow-up interview that will take place approximately 6 to 8 weeks after the initial interview. The purpose of this follow-up interview is to review the results of the study. Participants in this study will be mental health professionals who are currently treating lesbian victims of domestic violence in individual therapy. Since identifying these specific providers will be difficult, I hope to find participants by asking faculty and practicing mental health professionals in the community to nominate possible participants for this study. One trial of 301 randomized participants found that those who trained in Mental Health First Aid have greater confidence in providing help to others, greater likelihood of advising people to seek professional help, improved concordance with health professionals about treatments, and decreased stigmatizing attitudes. Unexpectedly, the study also found that Mental Health First Aid improved the mental health of the participants themselves. 
 
To date, Mental Health First Aid has been replicated in England, Scotland, Finland, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Wales and Singapore. In the US, we truly value the supporting evidence and strive to achieve fidelity to the original Mental Health First Aid program developed in Australia. In the next ten years, we hope that Mental Health First Aid in the US will become as common as CPR and First Aid training. It has the potential to reduce stigma, improve mental health literacy, and empower individuals - the benefits are limitless!

We recognize you as valuable community resource for women and want to give you information about a service that can help women become more successful in achieving financial and emotional stability.

Since 1980,  Women in Transition a private, nonprofit agency funded by United Way and Hennepin County, has provided employment counseling and job placement assistance.  We work on a sliding fee scale based on family size and income.  Workshop scholarships are also available for women on extremely limited income. 

We offer three types of small group workshops - Workplace Effectiveness, Job Transition Services and Personal Effectiveness (self esteem).  Through these initial sessions we help women discover what jobs best fit their interests and skills.  We also assist in finding work that meets their goals. Weekly follow up support continues until the right job is found.

Our philosophy is to help women gain self-confidence and self-knowledge.  This is the first step that each woman will need to navigate more successfully in the workforce.  For many, Women in Transition's workshops or coaching sessions are the only opportunity they have to share/discuss their struggles, fears, hopes, etc. in a nurturing, positive setting.

Three out of four women find jobs in less than three months with Women in Transitions support and guidance.  We offer workshops both day and evening, free parking, accessible facilities and are on metro transit bus routes.

Another Anti-Gay Bullying Suicide

Six hundred people gathered this evening to remember Jaheem Herrera, an 11-year-old Atlanta-area boy who hanged himself at home after relentless anti-gay bullying at his elementary school. According to his family, Jaheem came home from school last Thursday and hanged himself with a belt in his bedroom closet.

The DeKalb County schools, where Jaheem attended elementary school, reportedly have an anti-bullying program in place. But one classmate reported witnessing a bullying incident in the boys room that was so severe that Jaheem passed out. According to Jaheem's mother, she repeatedly complained to school officials about Jaheem's harassment, but nothing was done.

This latest death follows two other recent bullying-related suicides. Eleven-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover of Springfield, Massachusetts hanged himself with an electrical cord after repeated bullying with gay taunts. Seventeen-year-old Eric Mohat of Mentor, Ohio killed himself after a classmate publicly dared him in class to shoot himself. He was repeatedly called "queer," "fag," and "homo," often in front of his teachers.

The MN LGBT Therapist eNewsletter is a free networking tool for members of the LGBT Therapist Network. All Network members are welcome to contribute to this grass-roots bi-weekly eNewsletter. Just send your referral question, announcement, member accomplishment, space available information, event, conference, workshop, group information, or other pertinent notice to irenegreene@earthlink.net .

The MN LGBT Therapist eNewsletter is sent out every second Tuesday of the month.  All responses to questions, ads, workshops, etc. should be emailed directly back to the contact person in the notice. If you want your name added or deleted from the Network email list, please contact us.  Please note that if you do decide to delete your email, you will no longer receive general Network
